When we build community, we're all winners!
The 2009 pie party was a great success! Thank you to all of the volunteers who baked, minded pies, organized and cleaned up after 250 homemade pies and their eaters! There were so many people who came together to make the event happen, and happen well.
As a community we raised over $5,500 to fund early literacy computer stations for the Monona Public Library. Area kids will soon have another avenue to develop pre-reading skills.
Contestants really had fun with naming their pies this year, too! Some ran with the literacy theme and so had names like “Nuts for Literacy Pie” or were based on story titles like the “Cinderella Stayed Home Pie.”
Some names were fun while telling us about the pie such as the “Beet It Pie” with farmers’ market fresh beets and the “Plato Pie” with its Greek flavors.
Some of our most successful bakers were under 18 years old. They came up with fun homemade treats such as the “Cutie Pie,” the “Two Nuts in a Pod Pie” the “Monona 2020 Olympics Chocolate Pie,” and even the sophisticated “French Silk Pie.”
We did have two (count ‘em!) two Maywood Turtle Pies, one made by actual Maywood Turtles, and one by their fearless leader, Vice Principal Deb Lyons.
But you want to know what pies won the contest, so let’s get to it:
Peter Sobol’s “Rubin Pie” was the top money getter for the library, earning $149. He will receive a $100 gift certificate to Ken’s Meats and Deli on Monona Drive congratulations, Peter! And thanks, Ken’s!
Coz Skaife’s “Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater Pie” earned the second most for the library, $139. She will receive a $75 gift certificate to Ken’s.
And Coz Skaife’s “Lost Mitten Apple Raspberry Pie” earned the third most for the library, $137! She will also receive the $50 gift certificate to Ken’s. Nice work, Coz! And thanks, again, Ken’s!
4 more pies earned over $100, believe it or not. They were Shirley Klinkner’s Mile High Strawberry Pie, Sarah Whalen’s Cherry Pie, Liz Primozic’s Beet It Pie, and Jan Dorschel’s Rosy Raspberry Pear Pie. For each of these, Grimm Book Bindery will rebind a book for the library. Thank you bakers, and thank you Grimm!
Again this year bakers could vote for their favorites, Bakers’ Choice Award, but new this year we made separate categories for dinner and dessert pies. We would like to congratulate Liz Primozic for earning The Bakers’ Choice for Best Dinner Pie with the savory beet pie. Jan Dorschel’s Rosy Raspberry Pear Pie earned The Bakers’ Choice for Best Dessert Pie.
Last year we also noticed that kids gravitated to certain pies. These pies tended to go rather quickly, and so didn’t always have the opportunity to win other prizes (besides being especially sticky and gooey pies!). So, this year the Pie Party Committee decided to create a Kids’ Choice Award. Congratulations go out to Kristin Sobol for her Vanilla Cream Birthday Pie; it earned this honored Kids’ Choice Award.
Each of the Choice Awards winners will receive an engraved pie server and a $20 gift certificate to the Monona Farmers’ Market. Congratulations bakers, and thank you Monona Farmers’ Market!
Again, we would like to thank everyone for their time, energy, and commitment to community!
Special delivery!
Best lap in the house!
Happy as pie volunteers!
