How does the event work?
Come to the Monona Community Center on Saturday October 3 between 1 and 5 pm. There will be a suggested donation of $10 per person, or $20 per family to enter. Once in, you will have your choice of over 100 pies to sample!
Each sample pie will have a slice taken out and put on a plate next to the pie. Samplers will use taster spoons and after each bite throw the taster spoon away. Event volunteers will replace the sampler slices as they are consumed.
What’s this about voting?
As you are going around tasting all of that pie, you’re sure to find a few pies, bakers or stories that you’re partial to. So, upon entering and paying your donation, you’ll receive the equivalent amount in pie bucks. As you sample pie, you can vote for your favorites with those pie bucks, cash, and/or checks by putting them in the voting containers next to the pie. This amount, along with how much the pie fetches in the silent auction, will be added up and the pie that earns the most for the Early Literacy Program wins! First, second and third places will be awarded.
“What if I want a whole pie?” OR “OK, then, what’s this about bidding?”
Again, as you’re going around tasting pies, you might decide that there is one (or two, or ten!) that you’d like to take home. The good news is that for every sample pie, there will be an untouched identical pie that you can bid on. The bidding sheet will be right next to the pie. The Monona Veterinary Clinic started all of the bidding off at $8, and so you can’t let a perfectly good pie “go to the dogs”! After the sampling pie is gone that twin pie will go to the highest bidder on the hour (2:00, 3:00, 4:00, or 5:00 pm).
If guests don’t want to wait to take a pie home we have instituted a forced auctioned price of $100 for any pie. Some guests might collaborate and pool their donations to force an auction. The pie goes to live auction on the spot if there is a bid of $100 or more for a pie! And remember that for every pair of pies that earns more than $100 Grimm Book Bindery donates services to the Monona Public Library!

How much does it cost to attend the event?
The suggested donation at the door for the all-you-can sample judging is $10 per person or $20 per family.
Attendees might choose additional donations for:
□ Bids on a homemade pies to take home
□ Kids activities for a nominal fee
□ Monona Public Library's Booked for Life Endowment
□ Alice O’Mahar of Pampered Chef will also be taking orders for PC products and will donate 25% of her profits to the fundraiser.
What are the criteria for judging pies? Are there any categories of pie or qualities being judged?
There are no set criteria or categories for pie judging. This is a fundraiser for the Monona Public Library's Early Literacy Program first and the contestants have been encouraged to have fun with the challenge of raising money for the project.
When do I find out if I was the highest bidder on a pie and arrange to take it home?
Bidding is closed and the winning names will be read on the hour after the sampling pie is gone.
For example: if a sampling pie is gone at 2:35 PM the pie goes to the highest bidder listed on the bidding sheet at 3:00 pm. The highest bidder would need to arrange for someone to be present at 3:00 pm to pick up and pay for the pie or the pie would go to the next highest bidder.
What food will be available besides pie?
Remember that there will be both savory and sweet pies, so pie will serve as both dinner and dessert.
There will be ice water and lemonade available.
Starbucks will be providing coffee and hot chocolate!
Huntington Learning Center will be providing ice cream to go with the sweet pies, too!
How do I know there will be pie available at 4:30 PM if the event is from 1-5 PM?
If it is 4:30, please come! It is likely that there will be pies available until 5:00. We're shooting for having over 100 pies to sample again, this year!
Can I use the pie bucks received for entry into the pie party as part of my bid on the pies to take home?
No. The pie bucks are to be used in exchange for sampling pies.
